Is Animism a religion?



Animism isn’t a religion in comparison to Judaism, Islam and Christianity, but those who follow animism or even study it bed to differ. It is acclaimed that it is a worldview that expresses its opinions about the universe, people and all living and non -living things. It is not a religion within itself but it’s a type of belief such as shamanism and polytheism, Animism is a strong religion, which requires faithful followers in their elements of belief. Animism isn’t an organized religion, meaning it doesn’t have an institution e.g. a church. 


It doesn’t contain an articulated doctrine meaning they don’t follow a God. Animism doesn’t even have a sacred literature meaning they don’t follow the words of a bible e.g. the New Testament or the Hebrew Bible.  This religion is very different to well known religions but it doesn’t make it any less significant. Other religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and both Catholic and Protestant Christianity have not destroyed the Animism religion. Animism has existed for over two thousands years and the religion has coexisted with the other religions. 

What Practices take place within the religion? 


Animism is a primitive religion; it defies animals, stars and idols of all kinds. The religion practices spiritism, witchcraft, divination and astrology. The religion believes strongly in practicing magic, enchantments, spells, superstitions, amulets, charms or anything they believe will help protect them from evil spirits. 

What does Animism include?


Animism is often accompanied by ritual chants, dances, special folk drama and plays. Burial mounds found in Ban Chiang in North East Thailand are believed to be associated with Animism. This is suggested due to the fact that archeologist discovered special items inside that honor the dead.  Communities that are based around agriculture and rice growing in Asia are most commonly found to believe in Animism. The nomadic rural and hill tribes both are which on the mainland are also known to believe in Animism.

Their purpose is to understand the boundless universe in which we all live within.  They are obliged to respect all living and non living things. To ensure animism follower lives a for-filled life they must:

  •  Not worship over persons/gods. 

  •  Form relationships with humans and other non-human persons/ things. 

  •  Nurture and cherish your connections with people and the universe.

  •   Understand that there is no difference between the spirit world and material world.
